Our Story
Indigenal is a small distribution business founded by a family of Mixtec natives residing in the U.S., originally from Oaxaca, Mexico. We are committed to a mission of promoting and appreciating the artistry of indigenous communities such as our own. As such, we are proud to say we source our products directly from indigenous artisans and artisan collectives who embrace traditional techniques or designs, as they work to either preserve or advance their cultural legacy. We work closely with our partner artisans in a harmonious relationship, to value their art at a fair market prices. We thank you for appreciating the longstanding artistic traditions of our artisans, as is warranted by items of such beauty and labor of love; we can all prosper, together.
We were inspired by a love of our own peoples' traditional arts, the similarly significant arts of other first-nations peoples, and the legendary flower-songs of the late Texcoco Sovereign, Lord Nezahualcoyotl. Though a man of many facets and certainly a product of his time, Nezahualcoyotl is best remembered as a poet and more broadly as a lover of the arts; under his rule, Texcoco became a cultural bellwether for poets and artists of all sorts not only of his region but throughout ancient Mesoamerica. We can only hope our small enterprise is worthy of honoring his name, memory, and legacy.
"Live here on Earth, blossom! As you move and shake, flowers fall. My flowers are eternal, my songs are forever." - In Xochinquahuitl (The Flower Tree), By Nezahualcóyotl, 1402-1472
